Why oh why do we get headaches? I get my share of them, plus some! I have yet to really see a doctor for my headaches~but am definitely considering going.
Growing up, I really don’t remember getting headaches like I do today! The first person I knew that got migraines was my friend Cindy…she didn’t get them often, but when they came…she was sick! Fast forward 10 years, now married, my husband gets migraines occasionally as well as his mom used to get cluster headaches. I would get the occasional headache during this time but nothing real bad, until now!
My headaches used to come every month like clockwork. I could come before, after or even during my cycle…but I knew I would get one. This started 3 or so years ago. With these headaches, the volume of my kids voices seemed to be intense…and the light in the house was brighter than normal. That is when I KNEW I was experiencing a migraine. Lately though, it seems to be accompanied by mood swings, fatigue, and some funky vision changes. Hence the reason I am hoping to see a doc real soon!
There are different types of headaches, they include: Tension headaches, Migraine headaches and Cluster headaches. I am sure there are other types but these are the most common. About 90% of all adults have had a tension headache at least one time in their life, and they are more common in women than men. About 12% of the population has experienced or will experience a migraine headache. Children and adults can get a migraine. Before puberty, boys and girls are at equal risk of having a migraine but after puberty women get more migraines than men. Cluster headaches affect more men than women and children.
What on earth causes these headaches (and personally I want to know why women get them more…..not sure on that one!)? First of all, stress is a HUGE cause of headaches. Common illness and diseases can cause headache…cold, flu, sinus. Hunger, lack of sleep, food allergies, headaches can be caused when you are going through withdrawal from smoking, certain foods, alcohol, and drugs. If you get a headache, drink some water, dehydration can cause headaches. Sometimes you need to see a doctor, it can be more serious if you have a debilitating headache for a long period of time. Always seek a doctor if you feel uneasy or just not right.
There are many things that you can try to alleviate the pain of a headache. This includes: Drink a large glass of water (again dehydration is a common cause), a deep massage, aromatherapy (Sandlewood, peppermint, eucalyptus, lavender-are a few of the scents that help headache pain), take a hot shower, use your pressure points (apply pressure between your thumb and your index finger for 2 minutes can help), journal what you have eaten that could have triggered the headache (common foods that cause headaches are: Cheese-this one is HUGE, cold foods, alcohol, food additives and preservatives). Check out this site by Web MD to read more on what foods can cause headaches.
I have been asked many times by many people what I do for my headaches…I can say I have tried many of these. Trying to stay away from everyday stress is the best…but how realistic is that? Again, see your doctor if you have tried these and OTC medications like ibuprofen, etc. without relief. I hope this has helped even a little. Try to stay headache free!! Have a good day and try to relax!!
