The Good, The Bad and the Horrible Foods we eat

What foods are good for us?  What foods are bad for us?  What foods are the worst?  There is so much conflicting information out there.  It is amazing that we have any healthy people at all!!  Here is the basic scoop on what is good, bad and horrible for our bodies:

Good foods start with Water!!  We all know water is essential for life itself.  We need 1/2 our body weight in ounces each and every day~adults need at least 64oz.  I can attest to this, when I don’t get my daily water intake, I get headaches, and feel so sluggish!  Get yourself some water!!!!!

Fiber is essential as well.  Yes, Fiber, Fiber and more Fiber!!  Your body needs at least 25g of fiber each day.  Now, don’t go trying to get 25g of fiber if your body is used to 10g.  You will be spending lots of time with a bellyache AND spend lots of time in the bathroom!!!  You need to gradually build your body up to 25g, so it does not shock your system.  The best sources of fiber will be found in Fruits, Vegetables, Whole Grains, Nuts, Seeds, Legumes and Beans!!  Raw foods contain Live Enzymes…try to eat as many raw foods as possible.

Don’t know where to start to give your body more fiber?  Start with eating lots of Fruit or Veggies washed and ready to eat.  Whole Grain breads, adding more Beans and Legumes to your daily diet.  Add Seeds and Nuts or Berries to your salads, smoothies and cereals.  You will NOT get enough fiber from eating processed cereals and breads.  Milk, cheese, eggs and meat do NOT give you the fiber you need.  So, high protein diets are not the best if you are not getting the fiber you need!!

Omega 3 is fantastic for the body. Flax seed is a great way to add flax to your diet.  The best way to eat flax is when it is ground up…using a coffee grinder.  It is better absorbed while ground, instead of whole.  Seeds, Nuts, Sprouts, Soy and Free Range eggs and Free Range Chicken as well as Fish are all great sources of Omega 3!

Unsaturated fats (Poly and Mono) are good for you as well.  You can get Monounsaturated fats by eating Nuts, Avocados, Olive oil.  Polyunsaturated fats can be found in Fish, Seeds, Pine Nuts, Safflower, Sesame, Corn and Cottonseed oils.

Bad foods are foods like: Beef, Pork, Poultry, Bacon, Butter, Cheese, Milk, Sandwich meats, Coconut and Palm oils….these all contain Saturated Fats!  “We (adults) should get less than 7% of these each day”~Dr. Pam Popper

The Horrible foods are any foods that contain Trans Fats and Sugar.  These foods are anything with partially hydrogenated oils and shortening in the ingredients.  Foods like cookies, donuts, bagels, fried foods, fast foods, candy, margarine, cereal bars, etc.  Read labels!!  These type of foods CAN be found, you just have to look for them, mainly at health food stores.  Earth Balance is a fantastic substitution for butter or margarine, I have been using it for months now.  Earth Balance is a non-dairy butter spread and CAN be used in baking!!

Sugar is the most evil creature we put in our bodies!!  Sugar is probably the most processed food we put in our bodies.  Even Raw sugar (which we were using for a long time) goes through 17 processings…where white sugar goes through 37 processings.  High fructose corn syrup is horrible…our bodies do not even recognize it as a food.  And Artificial Sweeteners are the worst thing every created~they are synthetic!  In place of your sugar, try using Stevia, Raw Honey, Real Maple Syrup and Sucanat (Natural Cane Sugar).
